Small ticket transactions

A small ticket transaction service has recently been introduced by some major retailers. For transactions under AU$35, the service allows merchants to accept Visa/MasterCard® debit, credit and pre-paid cards without obtaining a cardholder’s signature or PIN.

  1. What is the small ticket transaction service?

The small ticket transaction service makes low value card acceptance faster and easier for customers and sales staff by eliminating the need for cardholders to sign or enter a PIN when making a qualified transaction of AU$35 or less.

  2. Can small ticket transactions be made with any card?

Yes, you can make small ticket transactions with any Visa/MasterCard credit or debit card issued by us.

  3. Can cardholders choose not to use it for purchases below AU$35?

No, if a merchant has implemented the service they will not ask you for a PIN or signature.

  4. Are these small ticket transactions secure?

Yes. Visa/MasterCard small ticket transactions will be processed between the merchant and us via the same secure channels.

  5. What if a cardholder loses their card and somebody else uses it?

Visa/MasterCard small ticket transactions are for low value purchases at merchants where the goods and services sold generally have little to nil resale value which makes fraud less likely.

If you believe that an unauthorised transaction has occurred on your account, and you did not contribute to the loss, the liability for that transaction may be limited. If you lose your card, please report it to us immediately. By doing so, you will be entitled to all card protection as stipulated in the BankSA Credit Card Conditions of Use.

  6. What are the benefits for cardholders?

The small ticket transaction service makes low value card purchases even faster and easier by eliminating the need to sign or enter a PIN when making a transaction of AU$35 or less at selected merchants.

  7. Will the merchant need to provide a receipt?

In these environments, the merchant will not need to provide the receipt if you do not want one, which again will increase the transaction speed and enhance your experience. If a transaction receipt is provided, the standard minimum data elements such as the merchant name and date and transaction amount will be provided.
