We protect you against fraud and keep your personal banking details secure at BankSA by providing leading edge, industry standard technology and processes. Our advanced computer systems are designed to detect possible fraudulent transactions.

Your role in protecting personal information and preventing fraud

Advanced technology cannot automatically protect you against fraud if you are careless with personal information.

By keeping your personal information secure and being aware of security, you can play an important part in protecting your personal financial information.

Useful security information and tips that will help ensure your security

 

Bank Cheques

  • Bank cheques should not be considered as cash
  • If you are in receipt of a bank cheque drawn on BankSA, check the following features:
    • Security Warning on the front
    • Fluorescent fibres built into the paper which can be seen under UV black light
    • Lock & key pattern watermark which can be seen when held up to light
    • Fluorescent ink used in the red portion of the BankSA logo which can be seen under UV black light
    • Thermo chromatic ink on back of cheque so that the BankSA logo will fade momentarily when heat is applied, such as by pressing your finger on them.

If you have any concerns over the validity of a bank cheque, you may choose to deposit it into your bank and await clearance before completing your transaction.

 

Personal Cheques

  • Keep cheque book in a safe place at all times
  • Use a felt pen when completing cheques
  • Do not give blank chequebook or single blank cheques to other people
  • Always complete details on the cheque and do not leave blank spaces before or after words and figures
  • Do not use pencil or erasable pen
  • Report stolen or lost chequebooks immediately
  • Do not write 'cheque enclosed' on envelopes
  • Make sure cheques are not visible through envelope windows
  • Store cancelled cheques in a safe place
 

Credit Cards

  • Always keep your credit card in a secure place.
  • Memorise your PIN and keep it confidential
  • Don't leave credit card receipts at shop counter
  • Save all receipts
  • Check statement transactions against receipts
  • Lock your mail box to prevent theft of statements
  • Never lend your card
  • Keep a list of important numbers to call if your card is lost or stolen
  • Report lost or stolen cards immediately
  • Watch for double swipe of card
  • Never divulge personal card information* to anyone on the internet or the telephone unless you are purchasing

When shopping online, use Verified by Visa or MasterCard SecureCode where possible.

* This includes your card number, your expiry date, and Card Verification Number (the 3 digit number on the signature panel).
 

Using ATMs and EFTPOS

  • Be aware of inappropriate double swiping of your card
  • Beware of people standing over your shoulder while entering your PIN or password
  • Tear up or shred receipts that you do not want to keep
  • Report suspicious behaviour or people lurking near an ATM
  • Report any suspicious looking equipment attached to an ATM
  • Keep your PIN private
  • Report a lost or stolen card immediately
 

Internet - online banking

  • Make sure you have legitimate and updated anti virus software
  • Keep your password confidential and secure
  • Follow security instructions contained on the Bank's web pages
  • Use 'Verified by Visa' or 'MasterCard SecureCode' sites where possible
  • Be alert when using a PC for banking and other transactions in public areas such as Internet cafes
  • Do not leave the screen idle for long periods or leave PC unattended
  • Make sure to change your password regularly
  • Logoff from online banking after completing your session
  • Do not respond to emails that request a response with your password
  • Report suspected security breaches immediately

Passbook

  • Keep passbook in a safe and secure location
  • Never give passbook to other people
  • Never sign deposit or withdrawal forms and keep in your passbook
 

General

  • Be alert
  • Protect your PIN and password
  • Report lost or stolen cards, cheques or statements immediately
  • Don't provide strangers with personal information about your accounts or cards (especially over the telephone).
  • If you do not receive your statement call and make an inquiry
  • Keep mail safe and secure
